SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke fell to visiting Randolph-Macon, 1-0 in ODAC women's soccer action at Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Maroons dropped to 10-6 on the season, 6-4 in the ODAC while the Yellow Jackets improved to 11-4, 7-3 in the conference.
Prior to the start of the match, seniors
Alida Haslett (Bryn Mawr, PA, Radnor),
Margaret Houston (Augusta, GA, Westminster School)and
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )were recognized on senior day. This class has amassed 50 wins and four-straight 10-win seasons over the last four years.
Roanoke, which fell to the Randolph-Macon for the first time since 2005, are 14-23-3 all-time in the series. The Maroons outshot the Yellow Jackets, 23-9, 10-6 in shots on goal. R-MC held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
R-MC scored midway through the second half with 28 minutes remaining and held on to win the match. Ashley Malinowski scored on her only shot of the afternoon as it sailed into the right side for the game-winner.
Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)and
Cynthia Suttora (Fort Salonga, NY, Our Lady of Mercy Academy)each totaled four shots, two on goal each.
McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)had three shots, two on goal followed by
Chayna Schiff (Broomall, PA, Marple Newton)with two shots on goal.
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)finished with five saves in goal for the Maroons. Mary Jocelyn had 10 for the Yellow Jackets.
The women will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to battle ODAC-foe Randolph College in their regular season finale. Roanoke is 30-1 against the Wildcats, including an 11-1 win last season. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
