SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke battled #25 Lynchburg to a 0-0 tie at Kerr Stadium in ODAC action on Saturday evening. The Maroons record now stands at 10-3-3, 6-0-1 on the season. The Hornets are now 11-1-2, 5-0-2 in the conference.
In a big showdown against not only the top two teams in the ODAC, but two of the top NSCAA South Region teams as well, both teams fought to a scoreless tie, which was the second time neither team came out on top for the second-straight year. The Maroons are now 34-15-7 all-time against the Hornets.
Lynchburg, ranked fourth in the south region, out-shot Roanoke, 11-8 including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. In a physical match, the Maroons had 16 of the 24 fouls called, including a yellow card which was called in the second overtime period.
Both teams had four corner kicks each, but Roanoke were much better down the stretch, as seven of their eight shots total, including three shots on goal came in the final 30 minutes of action.
Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville)and
Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington)each totaled two shots on the evening, with
AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Cherry Hill), Stark and
Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School)credited with a shot on goal.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)had a season-best eight saves in his sixth shutout of the season. Lynchburg's Matt Sturdivant collected three on the night.
The men will travel to Greensboro, NC to play against Guilford College in conference action. The Maroons are 22-5-1 all-time against the Quakers. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
