Ferrum, Va. --- Ferrum scored in the middle of the second half and held on to win, 1-0 against Roanoke on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons dropped to 2-1 on the season while the Panthers improved to 1-0.
Chris Key broke the scoreless tie in the middle of the second half as he got a feed from John LaPointe to put the Panthers ahead, 1-0 with 25 minutes remaining in the match. It was Ferrum's first victory over Roanoke as the Maroons still hold a 10-1 series advantage. It was the lowest scoring match in the series.
The Maroons outshot Ferrum, 16-3 and had a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks. Adam Thompson finished with two saves for the Maroons while Ferrum goalkeeper Chris Taylor had six saves on the afternoon. Five Maroons had two shots with Michael Walter and Jason Ryan adding two shots on goal apiece.
The men return to action this weekend as they travel to Elizabethtown, Pa. as they will play against Franklin & Marshall (Fri) and Elizabethtown (Sat.). The Maroons defeated the Diplomats in their only meeting in 2003. The Blue Jays hold a 2-1 series advantage but the Maroons won the last meeting, 3-2 in 1998.
