LEXINGTON, Va. -Washington and Lee defeated Roanoke, 4-1 in women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field. It was the ODAC-opener for the Maroons as they fall to 2-3-1, 0-1 in the ODAC while the Generals improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Maroons (2-3-1, 0-1) quickly got on board when senior forward Kristen McCoy found the back of the net unassisted just 1:25 into the first half. She is now tied for third in career points at Roanoke with 96.
W&L countered 14:54 later when Allie Espina slipped a shot past Roanoke goalkeeper Lindsay Kooiman at 16:09. Barnes scored the game-winner unassisted at 41:27 to give W&L a 2-1 edge at the half. Barnes and Espina helped pad the Generals' lead with scores at 53:30 and 73:53, respectively, en route to the three-goal victory.
Senior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo played the entire contest without a save, while Kooiman stopped five shots for Roanoke.
The women return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Hollins. The Maroons are 21-0 all-time against Hollins. Game time is set to begin at 4 pm.
