Roanoke Battles Mary Washington to 1-1 tie in Men's Soccer

Salem, Va. --- The Roanoke men's soccer team battled Mary Washington to a 1-1 tie at Kerr Stadium on Friday evening. The Maroons are now 3-1-1 on the season while the Eagles are 3-2-1 overall. The men are now 10-6-2 all-time in the series.
Jake Holt got the Maroons on the board first in the opening half as he scored off a rebound that found the back of the net to give them a 1-0 advantage. Michael Walter's header was deflected from the Eagles near the net as Holt was there to deliver to send the Maroons in the half with the lead.
The Eagles tied the contest, 1-1 early in the second half as Bram Simms' header found the right side of the net off a corner kick with just over three minutes gone in the half.
The Maroons defense really stepped up late in the match as Mary Washington had several chances for a game-winner at the end of regulation, but couldn't convert. The Maroons countered with several scoring opportunities of their own in the second overtime, especially some quality breakaway chances that didn't bounce their way as two went off the post.
The Maroons outshot the Eagles, 18-9 in the match, 10-4 in shots on goal along with a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks. It was a physical match, with nearly 30 fouls called in a packed stadium that really enhanced the intensity along with the great fan atmosphere.
Adam Thompson had three saves for Roanoke while Emmett Rutkowski finished with nine saves for Mary Washington. Michael Rouhana led the Maroons with four shots while Shaman Douglass and Kayvon Sarmadi each had three shots, two on goal.
The men will travel to Virginia Beach, Va. to battle Virginia Wesleyan in Roanoke's ODAC opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. The Maroons are 11-17-2 all-time against the Marlins, including three out of the last four meetings.
