Staunton, Va. --- The Roanoke College volleyball team defeated Mary Baldwin College, 3-1 in non-conference action this evening. The Maroons upped its winning-streak to 10, which is the second-longest in school history and remains unbeaten with a 10-0 mark. The Squirrels dropped to 0-10 on the season.
The Maroons opened up sharp, winning 25-16 to take the first set. The women played hard but fell, 27-25 to the Squirrels who won their first set over the Maroons since 1996. Roanoke roared back to claim the final two sets, 25-16 and 25-10 to win the match and tied the school's second-longest win streak with the 1994 team.
Sophomore
Caitlyn Long had 10 digs and four aces for the Maroons. She now needs only 34 more digs to break the school-record held by
Melissa Slusher. She is currently eighth all-time in career aces with 91, needing four more to move into seventh. Senior co-captain
Marcy Conner had nine kills and one block for Roanoke.
Erin Burnop also had eight kills to pace Roanoke. Both players passed coach and former star
Blair Trail for sixth (533) and fifth (568), respectively in career kills.
Conner, who has 99 block assists for her career, moves into sixth all-time in that career category. She is now sixth in career blocks (191) and block solos with 91.
In her first game back since her injury, junior
Lynsey Ferris had two block solos and two block assists to lead Roanoke. Sophomore
Emily Martin led the Maroons with 13 digs. Freshman
Kate Feldman led the Maroons with 35 assists.
The women will host seven-time defending ODAC Champion Washington & Lee in their ODAC-opener on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The Generals own a 22-1 series advantage and the Maroons haven't won a set in a match against them since 2003. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Bast Center.
