Virginia Wesleyan have big first half, defeat Maroons

Virginia Beach, Va. --- The men's basketball team was defeated by Virginia Wesleyan, 75-55 on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons dropped to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in conference play. The Marlins improved their record to 16-5, 10-4 in the ODAC.
VWC, who has won seven out of the last eight meetings, took a 40-23 lead at the half. The Marlins built their largest lead of the game at 25 with 12-minutes remaining in the game to help seal their 10th conference victory.
The Maroons were led by freshman Melvin Felix, who finished with 18 points and three steals in just 11 minutes of play. He shot 7-of-12 from the floor including 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Felix has scored 35 points this week (15-for-27 from the floor).
The Marlins out rebounded the Maroons, 46-26, the Maroons lowest rebounding total and biggest deficit all season. VWC outscored the Roanoke, 16-2 in second chance points. The Maroons free throw shooting woes continued, hitting only 50-percent for the game. Roanoke has hit a combined 26-for-54 in the last three games.
Virginia Wesleyan hit 46-percent from the floor while the Maroons were 40-percent. It was the first time a Maroons opponent shot over 40-percent since Guilford (1/23).
Josh LaPorte finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Curtis Peery added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The Marlins had four scorers in double-figures, led by Tyler Fantin with 17 points including 4-for-7 from three-point range and nine rebounds. Norman Hassell had 14 points and nine rebounds.
The men return to action tomorrow as they travel to Ashland, Va. to play Randolph-Macon at 2 p.m. The Maroons fell to the Yellow Jackets, 73-58 at home on 12/1. The Maroons have won only once (79-58 in 2007 ODAC Tournament) since 2001 (1-16).
