Roanoke leads the all-time series vs. Guilford, 35-11. The Maroons have won two of the last three meetings, both while Guilford was ranked in the top-20. They have split this season, with Roanoke winning, 68-56 at home against the #16 Quakers and a week later the Maroons lost 92-56 in Greensboro, N.C.
ODAC Tournament History
Roanoke holds a 45-17 record in its 28 years in the ODAC Tournament. The Maroons have won 10 titles, including seven in a row from 1981-87. From 1981-88, the program won 22-straight tournament games before falling to Bridgewater, 96-94 in four overtimes in the semifinals. The Maroons have advanced to the semifinal round 23 years and the championship game 13 times, including last year. Prior to last season, the Maroons had three-straight years with an early exit, falling in the quarterfinals.
About the Maroons
Roanoke is currently 18-8 overall and posted an 11-7 mark in the ODAC for the second-straight year. The 18 wins are the most since 2000-01. They have struggled as of late, dropping five of their last eight games to end the regular season, but the ODAC Tournament begins a new season. They stumbled to a 71-68 loss to Eastern Mennonite on their senior night in Harrisonburg, Va. on Feb. 23, but defeated W&L, 77-66 to advance to the ODAC Semifinals.
The Maroons are led by
Curtis Peery with 12.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and one blocked shot per game. He is shooting 50% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line.
AJ Dowell is averaging 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is shooting 44.2% from the field and is second on the team in free throws made with 60.
Josh LaPorte is averaging 10.6 points, eight rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.3 blocked shots per game.
Scouting the Quakers
Guilford has a 22-4 record after defeating Eastern Mennonite, 81-66 to advance to the ODAC Semifinals. The Quakers last defeat was to the Maroons, 68-58 in Salem as they have won 14-straight games, which ties the mark set in 1974-75. They are ranked #12 in the nation and third in the final NCAA Div. III South Region Rankings. The team is 16th nationally in points per game (83.7).
Ben Strong anchors the offensive attack with 25.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He is ranked among the top-15 in both categories. The Reigning NCAA Div. III Player of the Year and two-time ODAC Player of the Year is also among the top in Div. III in blocked shots with 2.3 per contest. Clay Henson (13.4 ppg/62 three-pointers) and Eric Belkowski (10.6 ppg/4.9 rpg) and Caleb Kimbrough (7.4 ppg/98 apg) also lead the Quakers this season.
LaPorte and Peery named All-ODAC

Curtis Peery were each selected to the men's basketball All-ODAC Team announced this evening. LaPorte was voted second-team honors while Peery was an honorable mention selection.
A senior from Staunton, Va., LaPorte was voted All-ODAC for the third-consecutive season. He was an honorable mention as a sophomore and was second-team as a junior. He is ranked among the Maroons all-time leaders in rebounding (4th), assists (11th), steals (5th) and blocked shots (3rd). With nine more assists, he will be the only player in the 94-year history of the program to have 900 points, 800 rebounds, 230 assists, 170 steals and 120 blocked shots in his career. He is third on the team in scoring (10.6 ppg), assists (2.7 apg) and second in steals (42) while leading the team in rebounding (7.9 rpg), field goal percentage (55.8%) and blocked shots with 34. He has led the team in rebounding and blocked shots all four years.
A junior from Salem, Peery earned his second All-ODAC honor after leading the team in scoring (12.9 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.2 rpg), field goal percentage (50%) and third in blocked shots with 21. He also leads the team in field goals made (118) and free-throws made with 74 on the season. He has 843 points and 465 rebounds for his career. The Salem High School product has led the Maroons in scoring six times and rebounding 12 times this season. He poured in a career-high 28 points vs. Emory & Henry on 1/9.
Last Meeting vs. Guilford
The men's basketball team fell to Guilford, 92-56 on Wednesday evening. The Maroons, who end a seven-game win streak, dropped to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC. The Quakers improved their record to 9-4, 5-2 in the ODAC.
Roanoke, ranked #24 in the latest D3Hoops Top-25 Poll, was out-rebounded, 47-33 and had a season-high 25 turnovers in their first loss since Dec. 18, 2007 vs. Hope. The allowed a season-high 92 points and blocked a season-low two shots. It was the largest margin of defeat in the all-time series vs. Guilford and the second fewest amount of points scored in the series (53 in 2006-07).
The Quakers opened the game with a 28-5 run in the first 12 minutes of play and extended their lead to 45-16 at the half. It was the first time since Dec. 18 (Hope) that the Maroons trailed in the first half and the largest first half deficit of the season.
The Maroons, shot 19-percent in the first half, 11-percent from three-point range while Guilford went 45-percent from the floor. Roanoke, who averages 15.8 turnovers per game, committed 14 in the first half. The men shot better in the second half (43%), but the Quakers did as well, hitting 55-percent of their shots to end the game with 49.3-percent from the floor, including 40-percent from three-point range.
Ben Strong and Eric Belkoski led the Quakers with 15 points each. Rhett Bonner finished with 13 while Clay Henson chipped in 10. Strong also had five rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots in the win.
Melvin Felix led the Maroons with 15 points.
Josh LaPorte had 10 points and thee assists.
Keith Carter tied
Robby Pridgen for ninth all-time in assists at Roanoke with two on the evening. He currently has 246 for his career.
Maroons vs. Top-25
Roanoke holds a 4-5 record against teams that were in or had votes in the top-25, according to d3hoops.com. They fell to fellow ODAC members #25 Randolph-Macon (twice), #16 Guilford (92-56) and #8 Hope (75-62). They split with Virginia Wesleyan and defeated #16 Guilford (68-58) at home this season. The men also defeated Shenandoah (75-71) and Defiance (69-68), who each had received votes in the top-25.
Record Watch
Senior
Ben Shrader is second all-time in career three-pointers made with 164 for his career. He leads the team in three-pointers made with 37. Shrader is averaging 7.4 points and 1.3 rebounds per game while shooting 36% from beyond the arc.
Senior guard
Keith Carter recently passed former player
Reggie Thomas '85 for fifth all-time in assists with 297 entering today's game. Carter leads the team in assists (99) while averaging 6.8 points and two rebounds per game. He has dished out nine assists twice this season, including the last outing vs. EMU 2/23.
Zach Milton has 55 steals on the season and needs eight more to rank him 10
th for steals in a single-season.
Senior forward
Josh LaPorte (120 career blocks) is third all-time, passing
Derek Otten '92 with a career-best six against EMU last weekend. He passed
James Pennix '88 for fifth in steals last game with 172 for his career. LaPorte is fourth in career rebounds (807), which is the second-highest rebounder since the school moved to Div. III in 1979. He currently has 230 assists for his career, making him the only player in school history with over 900 points, nearly 800 rebounds, over 230 assists, 170 steals and over 120 blocked shots in a career.
Head Coach Page Moir
In addition to leading the team to an 18-8 overall record, Page Moir owns a 332-180 all-time record as Roanoke's head coach. During his 19 years at the helm, Moir has led the Maroons to three Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships (1994, 96, 00) and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament six times (1994-97, 99-01). He is the winningest coach in Roanoke history by wins and third in winning percentage. He is second among active ODAC coaches in wins.
Roanoke Basketball History
The Roanoke College men's basketball program is currently in its 94th year of existence. In those years, the Maroons have compiled a 1,259-750 overall record. Roanoke is one of 58 Division III teams that have eclipsed 1,000 all-time wins. The Maroons are currently 504 games above .500 and would have to go 0-25 over the next 20 years to fall to an even all-time record. The Maroons are only the ninth Division III men's basketball team to be 500 games over .500. Entering the 2006-07 season, Roanoke was 15th on the all-time victories list in Division III and 17th on the all-time winning percentage list (.628).
