The men's basketball team fell to visiting Hampden-Sydney, 76-61 at the Bast Center on Sunday afternoon. The men drop to 15-7 overall and 9-6 in the ODAC. The Tigers improved to 12-10, 6-9 in conference play. The Maroons have now dropped three-straight and four out of their last five games.
Hampden-Sydney won the rebounding battle, 38-26 which led to 28 points in the paint and 18 second chance points for the game. They shot 50-percent for the game, 44.4% from three-point range while holding the Maroons to 38% from the floor.
The Tigers controlled the game early as they jumped out to a 28-11 lead in the first 11 minutes of play. Turner King led HSC scoring 10 of his 12 first half points during that span.
The Maroons roared back with a 21-5 run over the next six minutes to close their deficit to within one, 33-32 with 3:25 remaining.
HSC closed the half with a 12-2 run to take an 11-point lead, 45-34 into the locker room. Paul Matthews scored eight of his 12 points during the final three minutes of the first half.
Hampden-Sydney outrebounded Roanoke, 19-9 in the first half which led to 12 second chance points. The Tigers shot 56% from the field and 58% from beyond the arc while holding the Maroons to 39% in the half.
The Tigers continued their run in the second half as they scored the first 10 points to increase their lead to 21, 55-34.
Brent Dillard capped the 22-2 run off a lay-up which caused
Josh LaPorte's fourth foul at the 15-minute mark in the second half.
The Maroons fought back using a 15-4 run to close the gap to within 10 to make the score, 59-49 with 9:45 left to play. Freshman forward
Matt Crizer gave good minutes and sparked the second half run for Roanoke, scoring seven points, pulling down four rebounds and dished out an assist during that span.
The Tigers Byron Lawton found an open Troy Krause for a dunk from near midcourt to spark a 10-2 run that put the Maroons away to give HSC their 12th victory of the season.
The Tigers were led by King with 19 points and five rebounds. Krause finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Lawton had nine points and a game-high seven assists to pace Hampden-Sydeny.
Freshman
Melvin Felix led Roanoke with 15 points, hitting all four of his free-throw attempts. The newcomer has scored at least 15 points in three of his last four games.
Curtis Peery had 11 points and four rebounds while
Keith Carter finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Maroons are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Lynchburg College. Roanoke is 114-20 all-time vs. the Hornets, including the last seven meetings. Page Moir is 38-3 vs. Lynchburg in his career at Roanoke. The Maroons took a 90-64 decision back on Jan. 25 at home. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
