Roanoke defeats Hampden-Sydney, 70-65 in ODAC-Opener

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Hampden-Sydney, 70-65 in both teams ODAC-opener at the Bast Center on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Maroons improved to 6-1, 1-0 in the ODAC while the Tigers dropped to 2-4, 0-1 in the conference.
Curtis Peery scored 12 points to become the 31st player in the 95-year storied history at Roanoke to score 1,000 points for his career. He also passed Nathan Hungate to move into 30th all-time in career scoring. He finished with six rebounds and hit all eight of his free-throw attempts. He has scored in double-figures in nine-straight games dating back to last season.
With the win, Roanoke now holds a 91-73 all-time advantage against Hampden-Sydney and is winners of five-straight this season. The Maroons have won two of the last three games and five of the last 11 games in the series.
In a game with nine ties and 11 lead changes, Roanoke controlled the tempo and maintained the lead for most of the contest.
The game went back and forth early as Hampden-Sydney led by two, 13-11 after two made free-throws by Jonathon Mudd with 13:42 to go in the first half.
It was its last lead of the half as Roanoke slowly pulled away as Logan Singleton's layup gave the Maroons a six-point lead, 26-20 with 5:31 remaining. The Maroons went into the half with a 33-28 advantage.
Hampden-Sydney came out in the second half and pulled to within two, 43-41 led by Mudd's six points during that span.
Roanoke responded with a 10-2 run to increase its lead to nine, 52-43 with 12:19 remaining in the game.
The Tigers didn't go away, as they went on an 11-0 run to take a 54-52 lead for the first time since midway through the first half with 7:15 remaining as Roanoke called timeout.
A big three-pointer by Drew Gaeng put the Maroons up 55-54 but Sydney's Turner King hit a big three-pointer to give them a 60-59 lead just under four minutes to go.
Gaeng pulled through in the clutch again as his second trey of the game gave Roanoke the lead for good, 62-60. Peery pulled down two big rebounds and knocked down four-straight free-throws to seal the best start since the 2005-06 season.
Statistically, Hampden-Sydney won in nearly every category. They outscored the Maroons, 18-10 off turnovers, 26-18 in the paint, 15-7 in second chance points and won the rebounding war, 35-32. They were 80% from the free throw line and had 14 offensive rebounds.
Parrish Walker led the Maroons with 13 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor in addition to two assists. Melvin Felix finished with 12 points for his fifth-straight game in double-figures dating back to last season. Kendrick Chittock had nine points and five rebounds.
Mudd led all scorers with 18 points as he shot 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. King finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tigers, just three points shy of 1,000 for his career.
The men will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to battle ODAC-foe Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons own a 113-22 all-time advantage against the Hornets and have won the last nine meetings. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
