Virginia Beach, Va. --- Courtney Whorten and Jerilyn Sweeney led Virginia Wesleyan past Roanoke, 3-0 in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons dropped to 5-5-1, 3-2 in the ODAC while the Marlins improved to 5-2-1, 5-0-1 in ODAC play.
Whorten scored two goals and Sweeney scored the third goal along with an assist in the Marlins fifth conference win of the season. The Marlin defense held the Maroons to a season-low three shots on goal.
Whorten scored her first goal of the match in the 12th minute off an assist from Sweeney to give them a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, she scored off a penalty kick for an insurance goal to give VWC a 2-0 lead at the 59-minute mark. Sweeney capped the scoring in the final minute of the contest off an assist from Kelly Higgins.
Roanoke was out shot, 15-7, 9-3 in shots on goal. VWC also had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Virginia Wesleyan now leads the all-time series, 11-10-1 against the Maroons.
Lindsay Kooiman finished with six saves for Roanoke. Allison Lennox had three saves for the Marlins.
The women return home on Wednesday, Oct. 8 as they battle ODAC-foe Lynchburg. The Hornets are ranked #2 in the nation and are currently undefeated. The Maroons are 11-16 in the series as Lynchburg has won the last two meetings, both during last post-season. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
