Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Meredith Grunewald scored a goal and had two assists in Roanoke's 3-0 win at Guilford in ODAC women's soccer action Wednesday. The Maroons improved to 8-6-2 overall, 6-2-1 in the ODAC. Guilford slips to 7-10 (5-4 ODAC) after losing its final home match of the year. The Maroons are now 21-4 all-time against Guilford.
Grunewald opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a hard, angled shot that slipped through Guilford goalie Amber Stapler for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.
A little over five minutes later, a fine Grunewald through ball sprung
Melissa Laughlin on a breakaway. Laughlin outran the Guilford defenders and slotted the ball past Stapler for her first goal of the year and a 2-0 Maroons' lead.
The scored remained 2-0 in favor of the Maroons as Roanoke's defense effectively controlled Guilford forwards Jackie D'Orsaneo and Jada Daniel, who have combined to score 10 of the Quakers last 18 goals.
A Grunewald cross with just over 13 minutes remaining connected with an open
Kristen McCoy, who netted her eighth goal of the year to end the scoring. It was her ninth assist of the season which is fourth for most in a single-season.
Grunewald, a Hidden Valley product, is now three points shy of joining
Jill Hoffmeister and teammate McCoy as the only three players at Roanoke with over 100 career points. She is currently fourth all-time in scoring with 97 points, one behind
Shelly Olds (98). The all-time assists leader is also now eighth in career goals with 33. In addition, she is now tied for third in career game-winners with 10.
Both teams took 13 shots on the afternoon. Roanoke goalie
Lindsay Kooiman made three first-half saves for her fifth shutout of the year. Stapler, one of five Guilford seniors playing their final home game, made four stops, all in the second half.
The women will travel to Ashland, Va. in a Saturday ODAC match against Randolph-Macon. The Maroons are 12-23-3 against the Yellow Jackets all-time, but have claimed the last three meetings. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
