Maroons escape Emory & Henry with 100-90 Win

Emory, Va. --- The men's basketball team held off the Wasps of Emory & Henry for their fourth-straight win, 100-90 on Wednesday evening. The Maroons improve to 8-2 on the year, 2-1 in the ODAC while the Wasps dropped to 4-5; 0-2 in ODAC play. Roanoke leads the all-time series 61-39 and has won two-straight over the Wasps on the road. The men are off to their best start since the 1999-00 season when that team finished 24-5. That team went on to win the ODAC and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The men stormed out to a 58-41 halftime lead and held on by controlling the tempo of the game the best they could against the high-octane offensive attack by the Wasps. The large lead was cut to within two points with two minutes left, but the Maroons sealed the victory at the line to ice the game and their eighth victory.
The Maroons, which feature a nationally-ranked defense in points per game, held the Wasps to a season-low 90 points. It was the first time any opponent held them to 100 points since Feb. 11 vs. Bridgewater. It was also the lowest point total for EHC since Jan. 6, 2007 vs. Virginia Wesleyan.
The story of the game was between two individuals, junior Curtis Peery and newcomer Melvin Felix. Each scored career-highs of 28 and 20, respectively, while Felix also had a personal-best seven assists. Peery shot a career-high 11-of-13 from the field and grabbed five rebounds in the win.
The team blistered the nets shooting 58-percent from the floor. They also pulled down a season-best 50 rebounds, outrebounding the Wasps, 50-36 in their largest rebound margin of the season. In addition, they dished out a season-high 26 assists and had 10 or more steals for the fourth time this season. It was the first 100-point game for the Maroons since the last meeting vs. Emory & Henry (112-107OT on 1/31).
Senior Josh LaPorte struggled offensively scoring only five points, but he made it up with team-highs of nine rebounds and three steals. Fellow senior AJ Dowell had 12 points, four assists and three rebounds to pace the Maroons. Junior Zach Milton scored in double-figures for the second-straight game with 10 points including six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Newcomer William Shepherd scored a career-high four points in just two minutes of action tonight. Senior Jeff Leiter dished out a season-high four assists.
The men are back on the road on Sunday, Jan. 13 as they will play Washington & Lee at 4 p.m. Roanoke is 71-35 all-time and 32-5 under Page Moir vs. the Generals. The Maroons have won the last three meetings.
