Mens Basketball goes 2-0 over Weekend in ODAC Play

The men's basketball team went 2-0 this weekend to gain ground in the ODAC in a three-way tie for first-place. They defeated Hampden-Sydney and Lynchburg to improve to 13-3 overall and 7-2 in league play, identical to both Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon.
Roanoke defeated Hampden-Sydney, 67-65, on Saturday afternoon in Farmville, Va. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 9-6 on the season and 3-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Early in the first half of action, the Tigers built a 10-5 advantage on three-point field goals from Turner King and Drew Prehmus at the 15:03 mark. The Tigers increased their lead to 11 points, 18-7, on another three-pointer by King.
HSC continued to hold a lead, taking a 32-21 advantage on lay-in by senior forward Troy Kaase with 3:21 left to play in the first half. Over the final three and a half minutes, the Maroons closed the first half on an 11-0 run to tie the game at halftime, 32-32.
To start the second half, both teams traded baskets, trading the lead four times and tying the game three times. Roanoke took a six-point advantage, 44-38, on a pair of free throws by A.J. Dowell. The Maroons took their largest lead of the game, 56-45, at the 8:22 mark.
Trailing by eight points, 65-57, with just 2:27 left to play, Hampden-Sydney went on an 8-0 run to tie the game, 65-65, on lay-up by Kaase just under a minute left to play. After both teams committed turnovers, Dowell went to the line, making two free throws, to give the Maroons the 67-65 win.
HSC had four players score in double figures and was led by sophomore King with 18 points, while sophomore Karlis Trops finished with 14 points. Also scoring in double-figures for the Tigers were Kaase and Prehmus with ten points apiece.
Roanoke was led by Dowell who scored 21 points and dished out four assists, while Curtis Peery finished 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
The Maroons finished at 53.2 percent from the field and 33.3 from behind-the-arc. The Tigers out-rebounded the Maroons, 33-27.
Roanoke held Lynchburg to 29-percent shooting from the floor Sunday afternoon as the Maroons breezed to a 90-64 victory. With the loss, Lynchburg fell to 3-12, 1-8 in the conference.
The game was tied at five all in the first few minutes, but the Maroons outscored LC 36-9 over the next 13 minutes to put the game away early.
Evan Fancourt nailed five three pointers en route to a team-high 16 points. Mason Wooldridge posted 14 points, five rebounds and five assists and K.C. Mendez tallied career high of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Ben Shrader nailed six three-pointers to pace the Maroons (13-3/7-2 ODAC) with 18 points. Junior Curtis Peery added 12 points and seven caroms and junior Zach Milton also scored 12. Lynchburg shot just 19-of-66 from the floor (29%), while Roanoke made 44 percent of its field-goal attempts (30-69).
The men will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 against Bridgewater. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Maroons are 95-30 all-time vs. the Eagles. Roanoke swept the season series including an ODAC Tournament win to go 3-0. They are currently 8-5, 3-4 in the ODAC.
