Maroons defeat Sweet Briar, 6-1

Sweet Briar, VA – The field hockey team scored a season-high six goals and their second-straight win as they defeated Sweet Briar, 6-1 on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves their record to 2-3 on the season and 2-0 in the ODAC while Sweet Briar falls to 1-4 with the loss. Liz Hudson would pick up her first-career hat trick, scoring three goals while Leeanne Clark scored a season-high two goals in the win.

Roanoke had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the 14th and 17th minutes. Clark scored the first Maroon goal followed by Hudson, who would score off an assist from Jessica Perkins. Clark would score her second goal of the game in the 21^st minute unassisted to give them a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Alicia Modzelewski would erase the shutout as she brought the Vixens within two at 3-1 with minutes remaining in the first half.

In the second half, the Maroons would strike again as Hudson would score off Perkins' second assist on the afternoon and another goal in the 54^th minute unassisted to complete the hat trick. Sam Beard would finish the scoring three minutes later, scoring her first goal of the season.

The Vixen goalies split time in the cage Tuesday. Cat Cox ended with 14 saves, while Laura Wolf had six saves. Lindsey Paz had four saves on the afternoon for the Maroons. The Maroons outshot the Vixens, 29-8 on the afternoon, which also was a team season-high. Hudson led the Maroons with 12 total shots, 11 on goal.

The Maroons will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 as they will face Wesley at Mary Washington then against host Mary Washington on Sunday, Sept. 23.
