SALEM, VA--The Randolph-Macon men's basketball team made its first six shots from the field and trailed only one time in a 78-55 win over host Roanoke College on Sunday in Salem, VA. Roanoke falls to 11-10 with the loss, which was its second in as many days, and 7-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Randolph-Macon is 13-8 overall, 8-6 in the ODAC.
The Maroons took an early lead on an AJ Dowell cut to the basket and layup, but the Yellow Jackets quickly tied the score on a Jeremy Dixon short jumper in the lane. Following a Maroon turnover, Boris Varela hit a three-pointer from the wing to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good. RMC made its next four shots from the field, the fourth an Adam Krovic three from the corner to give the visitors a 15-9 lead.
Krovic's three was the first of three consecutive three-point field goals for the Yellow Jackets, a run that Andre Carter capped with a shot that gave RMC a 21-10 lead. The Randolph-Macon lead got out to as many as 13 early in the game, but the Maroons battled back and with 8:52 left in the first were within 25-20. A 13-2 RMC run gave the team a comfortable 16-point lead and at the break the Yellow Jackets led 46-31.
A Zach Milton driving layup to start the scoring in the second half brought the Maroons to within 13, but that was as close as the Maroons would get. The Yellow Jackets lead was as many as 30 in the second half.
Phil Hawley came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points for the Yellow Jackets, getting 13 of those in the first half on 5-for-5 shooting. Jeremy Dixon and David Carlson each scored 15 for RMC, which won the rebounding battle 40-25. Milton led the Maroons with nine points.
Roanoke is back in action next Saturday in a road game at Lynchburg and Sunday in a road game at Hampden-Sydney College.
