Curtis Peery's fourth double-double of the season, the Roanoke College men's basketball team defeated host Bridgewater 60-43 on Wednesday evening in Salem, VA. The Maroons, who have won four straight games over the Eagles, improve to 14-10 on the season and 10-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Eagles, who have secured the eighth and final spot in next week's ODAC tournament, fall to 8-16, 5-12 in the league.
Peery finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds, getting at least 20 points for the second time in the last three games. The sophomore center made nine of his 15 shots from the field, and scored 12 of his 20 in the second half of play. Ben Shrader came off the bench to score 14 points, making four of his seven three-point attempts. The 14-point effort was his third best of the season and marked the third straight game in which the junior has hit double-figures. Zach Milton added 10 points, eight of which came on driving layups in the first half. Milton also had four assists and three steals.
Bridgewater led just three times in the game, all three coming in the fist five minutes. Shrader hit a jumper from the elbow to give the Maroons an 8-7 lead with 14:58 left in the first half. The Maroons never trailed again. Holding the Eagles to just eight first half field goals and 29 percent from the field in the first half, the Maroons were able to take as much as a 14-pooint lead in the half, that coming at 29-15 on a Ben Lawler jumper.
Leading by 10 at the break, Roanoke allowed the Eagles to get within eight points early in the second half, 33-25, but an AJ Dowell reverse layup pushed the lead back to double-digits were it remained. The Maroon lead was as many as 21 in the second half.
The Maroons have one regular season contest remaining. That comes on Saturday as the team hosts Eastern Mennonite University. The game begins at 7:00pm.Currently in a tie for fourth place in the ODAC standings, the Maroons could secure the tournament third-seed with a win over Eastern Mennonite and an Emory & Henry loss to Guilford.
