ROANOKE'S WIN IS RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE

SALEM, VA- Roanoke College's men's basketball team put on a record-setting performance on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA, defeating Lynchburg College 91-34 in Old Dominion Athletic conference play. The 57-point margin of victory ties the school record which was originally set during the 1990-91 season, a 110-53 win over LaGrange (GA) College. Roanoke has now won seven straight games, its longest winning streak since the 2000-01 season. Roanoke is 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the ODAC, while Lynchburg falls to 6-9, 3-5.

It didn't take long for the Maroons to take command of the game, scoring the first four points on Curtis Peery and Zach Milton baskets. After Steven Echols answered with a layup for the Hornets, Peery scored again and the Maroons led 6-2. Evan Fancourt made a three-point from the wing to cut Roanoke's lead to one, but that would be as close as the visitors would be the rest of the day.

Sparked by a three-point play from AJ Dowell, the Maroons went on a 21-2 scoring run over the next 10 minutes and with 7:38 left in the half led 27-7.

A Bart Davis jumper from the corner and a Tee Jackson three-pointer and Roanoke's lead was as many as 31 points in the first half, Jordan Masini scored on a short hook shot to cap the first half scoring and bringing the Hornets to within 29, 45-16, at the half.

Much like the first half, the Maroons used defense in the second half to increase the lead. The Maroons held the Hornets to just four second half field goals, the final two Brad Puffenbarger three-pointers with less than three minutes to play and Roanoke holding more than a 50-point lead. Ty Sigmon stuck back one of his own misses with 1:14 left and Roanoke's lead was 60 points, 91-31. Puffenbarger hit his second three with 53 seconds left to make the final 91-34.

Jackson and Milton were the only two Maroons in double-figures in the scoring column, while all but one of the 14 players that played for the home team scored. Milton had a career-high 15 points. Jackson had 15 and also added three assists and a steal. Sigmon tied a career-high with nine points and also added six rebounds.

Puffenbarger was Lynchburg's leading scorer with six points. Lynchburg's 34 points were the fewest for a Maroon opponent since Hampden-Sydney managed to score just 33 in a 1956-57 game. That was a 54-33 Roanoke win.

The Maroons host the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney at 2:00pm on Sunday in the C. Homer Bast Center in Salem.
