LYNCHBURG, VA--Trailing 27-25 at halftime, the Roanoke College women's basketball team held host Randolph-Macon Woman's College to just seven second half field goals in a 63-46 Maroon win on Sunday. The Maroons improve to 11-10 overall and 8-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Randolph-Macon Woman's College falls to 5-13, 4-11 in the league.
The Maroons took as much as a seven-point lead in the first half, that at 16-9 on a
Maria Migliarese layup with 10:44 to play. The Maroons, however, would get outscored 18-9 the rest of the way and trailed 27-25 at the break. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game on a Becky Johnsen three-pointer with 4:16 to play and extended that lead to four, 25-21, on their next possession on a Sara Rechnitzer three. After the Wildcats took a 27-22 lead with 44 seconds left in the half,
Cindy McGraw trimmed the lead to just two with one of her three three-pointers in the game.
McGraw opened the second half scoring by making the first of two free throws. After missing the second, the ball was rebounded by RC's
Maria Migliarese. On the 'extra' possession,
Veronica Kelly knocked down a jumper to give the Maroons a 28-27 lead. Roanoke would never trail again. Seven minutes into the second half, the Maroon defense had held the Wildcats to just three points. A
Cindy McGraw four-point play allowed Roanoke to take a 10-point lead, 41-31. Roanoke's lead would get out to as many as 18 points, that on a Migliarese layup with 7:56 left.
McGraw led the Maroons with 13 points, while in her second college start Migliarese grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and also chipped in nine points. Kelly also added nine while
Stephanie Morrisey came off the bench to score six points.
The Maroons host Hollins University at 7:00pm on Tuesday evening in the C. Homer Bast Center in Salem.
