SALEM, VA--Led by 13 points from sophomore Josh Laporte, the Roanoke College Maroons rolled to a 62-46 victory over visiting Washington and Lee, snapping a three-game losing streak. Roanoke improves to 11-8 overall and 5-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Generals fall to 2-16 (2-11 ODAC). The Maroons now lead the all-time series between the two squads 69-35, and have won 28 of the past 31 meetings.
W & L built an early 8-2 lead after a three-pointer from Chris Halkitis just 1:53 into the game, but the Generals would only score 11 points the rest of the half, as Roanoke tied the game on a reverse layup from sophomore
Keith Carter and went ahead 15-14 on the ensuing free throw. The Maroons outscored W &L 15-5 the rest of the half, and went into the break up 30-19. Roanoke shot 42.9% in the first half, while the Generals made 31.6%.
The Maroons came out strong in the second half, building their lead as high as 29 after a layup by Laporte with 7:55 left. W&L outscored Roanoke 21-8 from then on, but it wouldn't be enough as the Maroons walked away with the 62-46 victory. Roanoke went 13 for 26 in second-half shooting for a game total of 46.3 percent, while the Generals shot 9 for 23 (39.1%) for a total of 35.7%.
Laporte was the only Maroon who ended the night in double-figures; sophomore Ben Shrader had nine points, while junior Tee Jackson added eight. Laporte also led Roanoke with eight rebounds. John Mumper had nine points for W&L.
Roanoke looks to build on the win when they travel to Emory and Henry on Wednesday; Washington and Lee has a week off before visiting Hampden-Sydney next Saturday.
