SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 72-55 win over visiting Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 8-5 on the season and 5-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Wildcats are now 3-8 overall, 2-6 against league opponents.
Wildcat senior Jennifer Prewitt opened the game's scoring with a layup 18 seconds in, but the Maroons responded with a
Cindy McGraw three-pointer from the corner to take a 3-2 lead. The Maroons would lead the rest of the way. McGraw's three sparked a 13-2 Roanoke run. After the three,
Brittany Johnson and
Erin Hanson accounted for eight of the next 10 points. The Wildcats answered back with a run of their own, trimming the Maroon lead to just four points, 13-9, with 11:18 to play in the first half. Sara Rechnitzer hit one of her three three-pointers in that run.
Ahead by eight points with just 31 seconds left in the first half, the Maroons closed out the opening 20 minutes on a 4-0 run to make the score 32-20 at the break. Johnson connected on a jumper from 10 feet out to give the Maroons a 10-point lead. After the Wildcats called a timeout with just nine seconds left to set up a play, Roanoke senior
Veronica Kelly got a steal in the backcourt and converted a layup at the buzzer. That gave the hosts the 12-point edge at the break.
The Wildcats were able to get to within 10 points coming out of halftime on a Nicole Amouri jumper from the elbow, but the Maroons would slowly get their lead out to 20 points in the first four minutes. Seven of Roanoke's first 13 points in the second half came from the free throw line.
The closest the Wildcats could come after that point was 17 points, that on a Rechnitzer layup with 10 seconds left in the game. The Maroon lead got out to as many as 23.
Hanson finished the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs. Hanson has recorded a double-double in four of the last seven games. Hanson went 11-for-11 from the free throw line, falling just two makes shy of tying an ODAC record. Johnson finished with a season-best 14 points.
Lindsay Reynolds had six assists, while
Torri Bridge came off the bench to add four assists.
Prewitt finished with 12 rebounds for the Wildcats, 11 of those coming in the first half. Rechnitzer led the team with 13 points, while Lianna Carrera added 11.
The Maroons are back in action on Sunday afternoon in a road game against the Hornets of Lynchburg College. The game in Lynchburg, VA begins at 3:00pm.
