WINCHESTER, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team broke into the win column on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Shenandoah University 4-1 on the road in non-conference action in Winchester, VA. The Maroons improve to 1-4 on the season, while Shenandoah falls to 1-4 overall. Roanoke will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference season-opener when the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College visit Salem.
On Tuesday, the Maroons and Hornets played to a scoreless draw in the first half, but the visitors jumped on their hosts in the second half, scoring the first three goals. Roanoke sophomore
Liz Hudson opened the game's scoring, putting in her fourth goal of the season, that just seconds into the second half of action. Senior
Melanie Bartnek scored the second, and eventual game-winning, goal about 20 minutes later, her first goal of the year. Sophomore
Kelly Miller earned her first collegiate assist on the tally.
Two minutes after Bartnek's goal,
Leeanne Clark got the first of her two goals, taking a pass from
Juliet Leonard on a penalty corner. The Hornets drew to within two goals of the Maroons on a Kelly Matagiese goal with just about six minutes left on the clock. The Maroons and Clark responded late in the contest to push the lead back to three. Bartnek earned her third point of the game on Clark's second goal, getting her team-best third assist of the season. With that assist, Bartnek moved into a tie for fourth place on Roanoke's all-time assist list (19).
