SWEET BRIAR, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team brought an end to a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime win at Sweet Briar on Friday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 4-14 overall and 2-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and secure the seventh seed in the league's postseason tournament which will begin next weekend.
After the host Vixens scored the game's first goal with 24:32 remaining in the game, the Maroons evened things up with just 1:56 showing on the game clock. The Maroons forced a penalty stroke, which sophomore
Kelly Miller converted to tie the score at one and send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, senior
Melanie Bartnek gave the Maroons the win, finishing a pass from
Liz Hudson with just five minutes expired in the extra time. Hudson was able draw the Sweet Briar out of the cage and out of position, slipping a pass to Bartnek who then had an easy tap-in for the game-winner.
The Maroons, who to this point in the season have played more games than every other Division III team in the country save one (Babson (MA)--which was has played 19 contests), take the next week off before returning to action in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament next Saturday. The Maroons will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent on the road.
