HUDSON'S THREE GOALS, BARTNEK'S THREE ASSISTS SPARK WIN

SALEM, VA--Liz Hudson (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper) recorded a hat trick and Melanie Bartnek (Springfield, VA/Annandale) added three assists to lead the Roanoke College field hockey team to a 7-3 win over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons, who extend their winning streak over the Yellow Jackets to six games, improve to 5-2 on the season. The contest was RC's first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game of the season. Randolph-Macon falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Just 1:15 into Saturday's game, the Maroons owned a 1-0 lead thanks to senior Kaylin Leavitt (Arlington, VA/Yorktown). Leavitt took an original shot that was stopped by a RMC defender, but stuck with the play and knocked in the game's first goal. About nine minutes later, Ashley Chambers (Towson, MD/Towson) redirected a long pass from Bartnek to give Roanoke the 2-0 lead. Hudson tallied the first of her three goals in the game just over 19 minutes in, swatting a ball out of midair into the cage. Senior Beth Wheeler (Wolfeboro, NH/Kingswood) had the assist on the play, which originated off of an RC corner.

Before the first half was complete, the Maroons had taken a 4-0 lead on Chambers' second goal of the contest. The goal was another redirection, this time coming on a pass from freshman Jena Lacoste (Centreville, MA/Bishop Stang). Hudson scored the first goal of the second half on a diving shot. Hudson, who finished the play on the ground and in the RMC cage, redirected a pass from Chambers.
Following a 13-minute scoreless stretch following Hudson's second goal, the final 12 minutes of the game were filled with plenty of offense. The Yellow Jackets trimmed Roanoke's lead to three goals with back-to-back tallies. Lyndsay Edginton was left unmarked in the box and stuck in a rebound for the first goal, while two minutes later Susan Frantz knocked in another rebound to make the score 5-2.

Following an RC timeout, Hudson scored the third of her goals, while Bartnek earned her second assist of the day. Thirty-seven seconds after Hudson's goal, Edginton tallied her second goal of the day on a shot from near the top of the circle. The scoring final came to a close with a Margaux Stunzi (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) goal with just 1:02 left on the game clock. Bartnek had her third assist on the play. The final three goals came in the final 2:19 of the game.

The Maroons travel to Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Tuesday and Division II Catawba College on Thursday before returning home on Saturday for a contest with the University of Mary Washington.
