SALEM, VA--After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Roanoke College field hockey team scored the final five goals of the game to roll to a 5-1 win over Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 3-2 overall on the season and 2-0 all-time against the Hornets. Shenandoah returns to Winchester, VA with a 1-2 overall mark.
Despite holding an early advantage on shots, the Maroons found themselves trailing 1-0 after Shenandoah scored on its first and only shot of the game. Jenn Iuliano collected a loose ball off of an SU penalty corner to score the goal. Immediately following the goal, the Maroons called a timeout, and coming out of the break scored three times over the next seven minutes to take control of the game.
The first of those three goals came from
Ashley Chambers (Towson, MD/Towson) as she was able to corral a rebound of a saved shot and score the first of her two goals in the game. Two minutes after the tying goal,
Liz Hudson (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper) one-timed a Chambers pass for the game-winning tally. Before the first half was over, Chambers added her second score, on an assist from
Margaux Stunzi (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead).
Leanne Clark (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington) gave the Maroons a 4-1 lead about 15 minutes into the second half. Clark redirected the ball out of pack in front of the Shenandoah cage. Before the end of the game, freshman
Laura Tobin (Stamford, CT/Westhill) hit a long shot into the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal to make the final score 5-1.
The Maroons are scheduled to play Eastern Mennonite University at 1:00pm on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The game is slated to be played at RC's Elizabeth Campus field.
