Hampden-Sydney, VA — Hampden-Sydney's eighth-ranked basketball team scored an 81-61 victory over Roanoke Monday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. With the win, the Tigers 28th in-a-row at home, Hampden-Sydney improves to 19-3 overall and 12-3 in the ODAC as the Maroons fall to 11-11 overall and 5-10 in conference play.
Hampden-Sydney led by eight (36-28) at the half, but opened the second stanza on a 10-2 run to push the advantage to 16 (46-30). The Tiger lead grew to as much as 25 (69-44) with a Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) three, while a three and pair of free throws by Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) down the stretch put the game on ice for Hampden-Sydney.
Jason Holman (Amelia, VA/Amelia Co.) scored 16 points to lead the Tigers as he connected on 6-of-7 from the floor, while Monroe added 15. Senior forward David Willson (Memphis, TN/MUS) recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 boards, as Mike Thompson (Frederick, MD/Linganore) and Brandon Randall each scored 11.
Jared Butler scored a game-high 20 points, thanks to an 11-of-17 effort from the foul line, to lead all players. Kevinn Hunter chipped in with 14 for the Maroons, while NyJuan Hall added eight off the bench.
Hampden-Sydney shot an even 50 percent (25-50) from the floor for the game and limited Roanoke to 40 percent (19-47) shooting. The Tigers out-rebounded the Maroons, 36-24, as the Hampden-Sydney post players held a 24-10 advantage on the boards.
The Tigers shot 41 percent (7-17) from beyond the arc and nailed 24-of-32 (75%) from the foul line, while Roanoke made 38 percent (6-16) from thee point range and 17-of-27 (63%) from the charity stripe. Hampden-Sydney forced 17 Maroon turnovers, while making 14 of its own.
