ASHLAND, Va. — The Randolph-Macon College men's basketball team beat visiting Roanoke College, 76-63, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Sunday, December 5. Their third straight win improves the Yellow Jackets to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC. Roanoke falls to 3-4 on the season and 0-3 in the conference.
Randolph-Macon was led by junior forward Justin Wansley, with a game-high 22 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. He pulled down 11 of his rebounds at the defensive end of the court. Sophomore forward Philip Hawley tied his career-high with 16 points on 6-of-8 (75.0%) shooting. He also made all four of his free throw attempts.
Roanoke only led briefly, early in the game. After a 8-8 tie, Randolph-Macon senior guard Justin Moyer made a three-pointer, assisted by Wansley, to put the Yellow Jackets up 11-8 with 13:47 left in the first half. The hosts would not trail again. The biggest lead in the first period was 21 points, 39-18 with 2:31 remaining before the break. The halftime margin was 19 points, 40-21.
The lead was double digits for most of the second half. The Maroons did manage to reduce the deficit to nine points, 72-63, with :25 left in the game, but that was as close as they would get. Randolph-Macon sophomore guard Adam Krovic made two foul shots with :24 on the clock, followed by two more from Moyer at the :11 mark, to put the game away.
Following the performances by Wansley and Hawley, Randolph-Macon's Moyer added 14 points on 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting, plus four assists. Krovic also made 4-of-7 field goals, and finished with 12 points. Junior guard Patrick Gill distributed a game-high five assists. Sophomore guard Stephen Sutherland came off the bench to score six points.
Leading Roanoke was senior forward Kevinn Hunter, with 18 points and game-highs of 19 rebounds and two blocked shots. Freshman guard Keith Carter totaled 15 points on 6-of-10 (60.0%) shooting, plus a team-high three assists. Freshman guard Ben Shrader scored eight points, while junior guard Jared Butler added seven points.
