SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team got back to action on Wednesday, beating Sweet Briar College 5-1 in Salem, VA in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Maroons improve to 10-7 on the season and 6-2 in the ODAC. Sweet Briar falls to 7-11 and 2-7 in conference action.
The Maroons opened scoring just 2:22 into Wednesday's contest. Junior
Melanie Bartnek (Springfield, VA/Annandale) crossed a pass into the Maroon circle where
Leeanne Clark (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington) redirected the ball into the cage. Exactly a minute later, senior
Heather Mosser (Whitehall, MD/Dulaney) made the score 2-0. Mosser redirected a
Beth Wheeler (Wolfeboro, NH/Kingswood) shot off of a penalty corner for her third goal of the season.
By the end of the first, the Maroons held a 4-0 lead. Clark struck again for the team's third goal and then freshman
Brooke Edwards (Whitestone, VA/Christchurch School) redirected a
Kaylin Leavitt (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) shot, her third of the season. With that assist, Leavitt broke the college's all-time record for career assists. The Vixens cut Roanoke's lead down to three goals on a score from Paula Kirkland. Late in the game, Roanoke's
Liz Hudson (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper) capped the scoring with her team-high 14th goal of the year.
The Maroons are back in action on Thursday in their final ODAC contest of the regular season. The Maroons need to secure a victory in order to have a shot at hosting a first round ODAC tournament contest.
