WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SUFFERS HOME LOSS TO GUILFORD

HARRISONBURG, VA-The Roanoke College women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped with a 60-48 home loss to Guilford College on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons, who have now lost six consecutive games to the Quakers, fall to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Quakers, who have won two of the past three ODAC championships, improve to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the league.

With the game going back and forth through the first 12 minutes, Guilford took control for good with 8:39 to play in the first half. With the game tied at 10, Guilford's Nicole McCory drained a three-pointer to give the Quakers a 13-10 lead. Guilford would never trail again in the game and allowed the Maroons to tie the score just once. Guilford's lead got up to as many as seven points in the first half, but Roanoke's Brittany Johnson (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) made the final basket of the half to cut the lead to five. Guilford went into the break with a 25-20 lead after both teams combined for 19 turnovers and an 18-for-62 (.290) effort from the field. The Maroons had 10 of those turnovers and were 0-for-10 from three-point range in the half.

The opening moments of the second half saw the Maroons draw even at 27 points apiece with 17:29 to play on a Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) three-pointer. Again, McCory put the Quakers back into the lead, that with another three, that less than a minute following Reynolds' strike. Things slowly got away from the Maroons, as Guilford's lead would eventually get as high as 14 points/ The Maroons turned the ball over 13 more times in the second half and managed just 40 percent from the field.

Guilford was led in the scoring column by Jennie Keichline, who scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the first half. Keichline also had five rebounds, two blocks, and three steals. Jennifer King, who opened the game's scoring, finished with nine points. Coming off the bench, Kelly Burger gave Guilford seven points, two assists, and three steals in 16 minutes.

Reynolds was again Roanoke's leading scorer, netting 13 points and making all three of Roanoke's three-pointers. Four different Maroons scored six points, including Johnson who also had five rebounds and two assists.

The Maroons are back in action on Friday night in a road game at ODAC rival Hollins University. The game will begin at 7:00pm.
