WOMEN'S HOOPS BEATS PREVIOUSLY UNBEATEN EMU

HARRISONBURG, VA-The Roanoke College women's basketball team trailed just one time in a 64-52 win at Eastern Mennonite University in a Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown. The Maroons, who have now won two games in a row, improve to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC. The Royals, who defeated Roanoke 74-63 earlier this season in Salem, suffer their first loss of the year, dropping to 7-1 overall and 4-1 against conference opponents.

Roanoke point guard Veronica Kelly (Wesport, CT/Staples) opened up Sunday's scoring with a free throw 1:20 into the contest. The Royals responded 40 seconds later on a jumper from Carrie Grandstaff, giving the hosts their only lead of the contest, 2-1. Two free throws from sophomore Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) gave Roanoke a 3-2 lead with 17:42 to play in the first. Leading 11-8 with just over 12 minutes showing on the clock, the Maroons went on a 13-0 run to take full control of things.

Chandra Forrester (Wytheville, VA/Rural Retreat) got the streak started with a short jumper. Junior Annie Roehm (Weston, CT/Weston) then scored four consecutive points, on a three-pointer and a free throw two minutes later, putting the RC lead at nine points, 17-8. After four more points in the paint, Reynolds capped the run with one of her four three-pointers in the game. Over the next three minutes, EMU was able to cut the RC lead down to eight, but a 7-0 Maroon run to close the half sent the Maroons into the break with a 33-18 lead. Forrester had four of her 10 points in the half-ending run.

Twice in the second half the Maroons were able to extend their lead out to as many as 26 points, the second such lead coming on an Emily Smith (Hampton, VA/Hampton) layup with 11:09 to play in the contest. Reynolds opened the second with a three and then later added her fourth of the game to give Roanoke a 43-21 lead. The Royals were able to again cut into Roanoke's lead, but this time late in the contest, hitting three three-pointers in the final four minutes of the contest to make the final margin of victory 12.

Reynolds finished the game with a season-high 18 points for the Maroons. The sophomore also added four assists and five rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Forrester hit double-figures in the scoring column for the second consecutive game, getting 10 points. She also added six rebounds. Smith grabbed a season-high six rebounds for the Maroons, who held EMU to just 34 percent from the field in the game and held a 44-29 rebounding edge.

Roanoke is back in action on Wednesday in a 2:00pm contest against the Quakers of Guilford College. The game is a 2:00pm start because of the RC men's home tournament later in the day. Guilford comes to Salem having won two of the past three ODAC championships and sporting a 6-3 overall record following a 68-61 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon.
