MARTIN STARS IN GUILFORD MEN'S BASKETBALL WIN OVER ROANOKE

Box Score
Greensboro, NC -- Sophomore Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) scored 24 points and made six steals, both career highs, in Guilford's 96-74 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Roanoke Saturday. The triumph marks Guilford's (11-13, 7-10 ODAC) second in three games with the Maroons (13-11, 10-7 ODAC), who had won the previous 21 of the 22 meetings between the two schools, dating back to 1992.
Martin hit for 15 second-half points and triggered a decisive 13-1 Guilford run midway through the period. After Robby Pridgen's (Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) hoop gave Roanoke a 64-61 lead with 11:15 left, Martin tied the score for the fifth and final time with his first of two three-pointers. Guilford's Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) followed with the go-ahead points on a traditional three-point play and later capped the Quakers' run with a basket at the 5:30 mark that gave Guilford a 74-65 lead. Roanoke missed eight field goals during Guilford's run. The Maroons went seven minutes and 19 seconds between Pridgen's bucket and their next field goal, a Andrew Crowder (Radford, VA/Radford) three-pointer with 3:56 left that trimmed Guilford's lead to 81-69.
While the Maroons struggled to find the basket in the second half, Guilford enjoyed its best shooting night (.579) since shooting 58.7 percent in a win over Warren Wilson December 18, 1998. The Quakers also made 22 of 27 free throws, including 11 of 12 in the second half. Guilford's 10 turnovers marked its fewest since making 10 miscues in a Feb. 6, 1999 loss at Virginia Wesleyan.
Junior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) scored 20 points and sophomore forward Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page) tallied 11 points and five rebounds for the Quakers. Williams totaled nine points (seven in the second half), four boards and four assists. Junior forward Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) also had nine points, plus a team-best seven rebounds.
Pridgen paced the Maroons with 21 points and two steals. Senior guard Josh Foster (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Valley Christian) made five-of-10 field goals, including two three-pointers, and finished with 16 points. Senior Nate Stewart (Christiansburg, VA/Auburn) had seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.
