MOIR GETS RECORD WIN WITH VICTORY AT AVERETT

DANVILLE, VA-Bolstered by a career-high 23 points from Bryan Fasnacht (Salem, VA/Glenvar) and 10 second-half points from Jason Graffam (Vienna, VA/Marshall), Roanoke College head men's basketball coach Page Moir picked up his school-record 261st career victory with the Maroons' 87-69 win over Averett University on Saturday. Moir and the Maroons improve to 5-1 on the season and 15-1 all-time against the Cougars. Averett, which got its lone win over Roanoke during the 1988-89 season, falls to 0-5 on the season.

The Maroons never trailed in Saturday's contest, scoring 10 of the first 14 points and 20 of the first 29. Drew Crowder (Radford, VA/Radford) had 10 points and three assists in the first six minutes of the ball game, staking the Maroons to the 20-9 lead with 14:56 to play. Crowder hit two three-pointers during the stretch and ended the game with three triples and 15 total points. Midway through the first half, the Maroons were able to push their lead out to as many as 14 points. With just about a second left in the half, Fasnacht hit a short jumper to give the Maroons a 46-29 lead and as the ball went through the hoop the Cougars were called for a technical foul. Fasnacht hit the proceeding two free throws to give the Maroons the 48-29 lead at the break.

Roanoke's lead hovered around 20 points for the entire second half. The Cougars were able to get within 14 points over the final 20 minutes of play, but no closer. Graffam scored 10 points in the second half. Fasnacht scored 11 of his 23 points in the second half as well.

All five of Roanoke's starters finished in double-figures in the scoring column. Kevinn Hunter (Dale City, VA/Gar-Field) finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Jared Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) shot 5-of-9 from the field and finished the day with 14 points. As a team the Maroons outrebounded the Cougars 51-42 with Graffam and Hunter leading the way with seven each.

With the win Moir's overall career record improves to 261-125. Now in his 15th season with the Maroons, Moir surpasses Ed Green on the college's all-time victory list. Green went 260-83 in his 12 seasons with the Maroons, which spanned from 1977-89.

Moir and his Maroons will look to continue their winning ways, which has seen them get off to their best start since the 1999-2000 season, but will have to wait a while to do so. The Maroons are not back in action until January 3rd when they play at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, VA. The Maroons and Marlins will tip-off at 2:00pm. The Maroons will then head to Randolph-Macon College on Sunday for a Sunday contest with the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets.
