SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team improved to 3-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference thanks to a 4-2 victory over Bridgewater College on Tuesday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons, who have won seven straight contests over the Eagles also improve to 9-3 overall with their second consecutive victory. The Eagles fall to 4-4 on the season including a 1-4 mark in conference play.
The Roanoke win was was actually a come-from-behind victory after Bridgewater's Tasha Chase gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a one-time goal just over 17 minutes into the match. That lead held for barely four minutes with
Carrie Smith (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) scoring her second goal of the season, a goal that evened the score at one. Before the first half was over, Roanoke leading scorer
Rachel Flint (Towson, MD/Towson) gave the Maroons the lead for good tapping in a pass from
Kelly Lyons (White River Junction, VT/Hartford).
Flint would score the eventual game-winner early in the second half when she finished a two-on-two pass from fellow senior
Sara Lundgren (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry). After
Kelley Busik (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) scored off of a
Kaylin Leavitt (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) pass to make the score 4-1, Chase again tallied for the Eagles to make the score 4-2, but that came with just 1:38 to play in the contest.
The Maroons are back in action on Saturday with a home game against the Wildcats of Randolph-Macon Woman's College. The Maroons and Wildcats will get underway at 1:00pm at Roanoke's Elizabeth Campus.
