WINCHESTER, VA--Behind two goals apiece from
Sara Lundgren (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) and
Erin Walsch (Baltimore, MD/Towson) the Roanoke College field hockey team defeated Shenandoah University 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Winchester, VA. The Maroons, who scored seven goals for the second consecutive day, improve to 7-2 overall while the Hornets fall to 0-3. The meeting was the first between the two teams.
Just a minute and a half into the game, the Maroons took the lead on a
Rachel Flint (Towson, MD/Towson) goal, her 12th of the season. In the matter of the next two minutes, Lundgren got both of her scores to give the Maroons a 3-0 lead. The three goals would be all the Maroons would get in the first half, but scored the first three of the second half to open up a 6-0 lead.
Walsch scored her second goal of the season just under a minute into the second half and
Carrie Smith (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) followed with her first goal of the year just four minutes later. Walsch gave the Maroons a 6-0 lead before the Hornets were able to score their first of the contest with 23 minutes to play.
Kelly Lyons (White River Junction, VT/Hartford) scored her third goal in two days to round out the scoring.
Kaylin Leavitt (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) and
Kelley Busik (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) each had their first multiple assist games of the second, both finishing with two in the victory. For the second straight day, sophomore
Melanie Bartnek (Springfield, VA/Annandale) earned an assist on a Maroon goal.
