Since taking over as Roanoke’s Director of Athletics in June 2023, Campbell has grown the athletic department to 28 varsity teams and nearly 700 student-athletes. He oversaw the reintroduction of football and the addition of competitive cheer and band. Two full-time strength and conditioning coaches and an assistant director of athletic communications have also been added to the department in his three years.
A few athletic highlights in his tenure include back-to-back NCAA Tournament runs for the men’s basketball team and its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference Title in 2025-26 since the 1999-2000 campaign. The wrestling program produced the first individual national champion in program history in 2004-25 and placed sixth in the team standings in 2025-26. The men’s lacrosse team won its first NCAA Tournament game in 2026 since 2013 and the women’s lacrosse and softball programs have enjoyed NCAA Tournament success.
Maroons have earned numerous academic awards, including a record 296 ODAC All-Academic Team honorees in 2026 and five student-athletes recognized as valedictorians in his three years. Campbell helped institute Athletic Giving Day, with nearly $700,000 raised in just two years.
Campbell spearheaded the effort to construct the new William ‘Dox’ Doxanas 8,500-square-foot strength and conditioning facility housed in the historic Alumni Gym. Completed in August 2025, the upgraded center serves all 28 varsity sports teams, allowing multiple teams to train simultaneously with elite-level equipment.
Campbell has 26 years of experience working in intercollegiate athletics. He was most recently the director of athletics at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, a role he held since 2020. Previously, he served as director of athletics at Western Oregon University, Tuskegee University and Stillman College.
Campbell's experience includes managing NCAA athletic departments at both Div. II and Div. III programs. He has also served on several NCAA committees. Campbell holds a Master of Science in counseling and human development from Radford University and a Bachelor of Science in social work from Longwood University.
Campbell assumed the role as director of athletics from Scott Allison '79, who retired at the end of June 2023.
