Maroon tennis teams release fall schedules

SALEM, Va. – The Roanoke College men's and women's tennis teams released their fall schedules on Wednesday, with five dates for play on each side.

The women's fall slate begins Saturday, Sept. 12 with a road match at the University of Lynchburg. The following Sunday the Maroons welcome Shenandoah University and Lynchburg for the Roanoke Invitational on the Elizabeth Campus Courts. RC is at Mary Washington University Sept. 25-27 for the ITA Regional Individual Tournament. The fall season concludes with the Methodist Invitational Oct. 9-10 and at home against Emory & Henry University Oct. 24.

"I'm very excited to see our women's team in action early on in September with a Sept 12 scrimmage at Lynchburg, who were in the ODAC Semifinals last May," said first-year head coach Sam Martinez.  "We have a great mix of new faces and experience, and our fall schedule will help the team grow together quickly. The away invitational at Methodist will be high level matches for the group, as well as a home D2 match with former ODAC foe Emory & Henry October 24. I've got a great feeling about the season upcoming for the team."

The men's schedule opens Saturday, Sept. 19 with the Roanoke Invitational with matches against Shenandoah and Lynchburg. The team is at Mary Washington Oct. 2-4 for the ITA Regional Individual Tournament with a scrimmage at King University (Tenn.) Oct. 2. The Maroons travel to Methodist Oct. 7 and wrap up the season home Oct. 24 against E&H.

"The tournaments & dual matches we have for the fall will be great experience for our new group that will challenge them," said Martinez. "Having Shenandoah and Lynchburg who finished second and sixth respectively, in the ODAC last season for our home invitational September 19 is an early indicator to see where the guys are at. Playing Methodist at home in early October will be great as well as they were in the ITA National Rankings last Spring. I can't wait to see what we have and how the team competes."
