As Sports Editor of the Roanoke World News (Now Roanoke Times), he gave much of his time and effort to working with young people in the Roanoke College community.
For 25 years he coached sandlot football compiling a record of 225 wins, 28 losses. For his efforts, he received Virginia State and Roanoke Jaycee Physical Fitness Award for contribution to youth athletics and the Sport Magazine Award for youth leadership.
McLelland was the organizer of the Western Virginia Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and honored as Father of the Year and Citizen of the Year in Roanoke Valley.
