Played basketball and taught swimming and lifeguarding while at Roanoke.  He loved athletics and was able to catch the beauty of an athlete in motion with his camera.

His senior year, Hammersley edited the yearbook and filled many pages with exciting sports photographs.  On the day of his graduation, he went to work for the Roanoke Times.

In 1956, he was a key force behind the Times becoming one of the first newspapers in America to use high speed sequence cameras.  For his efforts, he was voted three times as Photographer of the Year and won the prestigious Miley Award for distinguished photography.
