Barnett left Roanoke College with the reputation as one of the most dedicated athletes the school has ever produced.
He was a three-year starter on the baseball team, and a tackle for the Maroon football teams in 1931-33.
During his career at Roanoke, Barnett made the honorable mention All-Virginia Conference football team in 1931 and First-Team All-Virginia Conference Team in 1932-33.
President of the General Athletic Association 1933-34.
After Roanoke, he signed with the St. Louis Browns of the American League and played with San Antonio in the Texas league.
