At Roanoke College, Smith excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, he received recognition as an All-State guard.

Since 1938, he served as coach and athletic director at William Fleming High School. His contribution to the athletic program of the community led to his selection as Father of the Year in the Roanoke Valley in 1955. Given honor of Citizen of the Year in 1958.
